On my wish list — along with Notre Dame — was touring three small museums: the Marmottan, the Jacquemart-André and the Nissim de Camondo (closed for a two year renovation). Today I visited the Marmottan and the Jacquemart Andre. The Marmottan is in the western section of the city on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne — 11 Metro stops on the very crowded number 9 train. The crowded Metro aside, it was a lovely excursion. There is a large park (in addition to the Bois de Boulogne), several large mansions (one once owned by the Rothschilds), and several embassies. The Marmottan is the repository of many paintings by Claude Monet, given by his son. There were some familiar canvasses and many I had not before seen. Those of the Giverny garden — water lilies, roses and other flowers — were the most familiar. Another gallery had an exhibition of Berthe Morisot’s paintings, and yet another gallery had scores of illuminated manuscripts. The house, home of a wealthy family in the first quarter of the 20th century, was a lovely place to tour. The Jacquemart Andre is on the next page.
