First day in Athens….the flight was an hour early and the temperature a warm 90, but there was a steady breeze. A bit travel numb, we stayed near the hotel, and what a fascinating neighborhood it was: several 11th and 12th century churches, ruins of the Agora, or ancient marketplace, the Tower of Winds with its deep bas reliefs of blowing winds, ruins of Hadrian’s library, the Roman marketplace….all watched over from on high by the Acropolis. We found dinner in an Albanian restaurant in an impossibly beautiful square, a table of mezze, or appetizers, the most interesting of which was a thyme, walnut, honey and feta pie in phyllo pastry.
