Italy: Bologna

In 2016 I passed through Bologna for the first time and fell in love with this stylish city, its churches and museums and its superb food. The food is good everywhere in Italy, but Bologna is undoubtedly the best. This trip Bologna was a base for trips to Ravenna and Modena. We arrived in Bologna on the eve of the Saint Petronius, the city’s patron saint. There were concerts, entertainments, fireworks and a solemn evensong in the basilica which we attended. Bologna is also home to one of Europe’s oldest universities, which gives the city a youthful feel. Being a return visit there was opportunity to do things I would never do on a first visit, such as hike the covered walkway from Porta Saragozza to the shrine of San Luca, a 5 kilometer hike, uphill.
