A lovely day exploring Bilbao beyond the Guggenheim. The oldest part of the city — Casco — was a delightful place to wander with the cathedral, a few other notable churches, narrow streets lined with colorful houses, and a truly amazing market where one could buy ready to eat food (pinxtos) as well as beef, fish, spices, vegetables, cheeses, wines. The pinxtos are bought by the piece and one can have a satisfying meal for ten euros. Suddenly, signs of the Camino de Santiago (the pilgrim’s route from Paris to St James’ shrine in Santiago de Compostela) are everywhere. The first coquille (or St James’ emblem) we saw was in front of Notre Dame de Paris. In eight days we will be in Santiago de Compostela.
