Icons are everywhere in Romania, especially in the Orthodox and Uniate churches. Many are of what might be called a naïve, primitive style, but closer inspection reveals considerable sophistication. Unique to Romania are icons painted in reverse on glass (églomise), a process that produces particularly luminous icons. A museum in the village of Sibiel exhibits hundreds of glass icons collected by a faithful parish priest. Painted eggs are also an important part of Orthodox piety. In the village of Varna two prolific egg painters vie for titles of best and most. We visited the museum of one of the women where we saw her collection of 10,000-15,000 eggs, most painted by her.
