Sunday in Leon

Somehow the fonts changed on these posts and I cannot recapture the one I preferred….today was bright and sunny and the spring chill has almost vanished. We started the day at one of Antonio Gaudi’s first projects, Casa Botines, a building originally built to house a textile shop with apartments above. The building had many modern features including an inventive ventilation system, but what most intrigued me was that the building was to be “read” as a dragon. Each architectural element refers to a part of a dragon; the building is also oriented to the constellations. Workmanship throughout the building was exceptional.

There were a two museums today in addition to Casa Botines: San Isidore and the cathedral. In the photos below is a corporal box, which will mean nothing unless you’ve been on an Altar guild — it dates from the 13th century; also two 13th century doves that were used as hanging pyxes above an altar.

The Leon cathedral has one of Europe’s largest collections of stained glass, most of it 14th century. The day was bright and clear and the glass stunning. Today I also had a red rice paella — clams, langoustines, shrimp, mussels.
