The monasteries in Meteora date to the 14th century, but there are records of monastic foundations in the 10th century here. Monks and nuns chose to locate their monasteries and convents atop the region’s unusual rock formations left when a prehistoric sea receded. We will visit several tomorrow — one reached by ropes and ladders. At sunset people gather atop some of the formations for one of nature’s greatest daily shows, sunset.
